In , researchers at SAFE-T, led by James Worling — a clinical and forensic psychologist — developed the first risk assessment tool for adolescents who have sexually offended. Worling and colleagues have also published follow-up studies on the effectiveness of treatment on youth offenders. Youth who received comprehensive and specialized treatment at SAFE-T have been shown to be significantly less likely to commit further sexual and non-sexual crimes, up to 20 years later.
Worling worries that the unique program will be lost as the province shuts down Thistletown, which treats people with mental health, behavioural and developmental challenges. It is one of only two such facilities in the province directly operated by the government.
