As an alternative, students must successfully complete approved courses in technical writing and speech, with a grade of B or better. Each doctoral candidate must pass a written and oral qualifying or comprehensive examination, administered and supervised by the department. This examination is given only once each semester. Forms provided by the dean should be filed a semester before graduation and approved by the student's thesis committee and the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
